Interlude
Branding / Environmental Application - Spring 2024
Completed at Chute Gerdeman as a professional development project with an Interior Design student intern. Mentored by designers at Chute Gerdeman, we used the Chute Gerdeman design process to develop a brand. Then, we designed a pop-up shop experience for that brand.

Chute Gerdeman Design Process
Laid out by our mentors, Aya and I were given a design process to follow that closely aligns with Chute Gerdeman’s.
Part 1: Research
Values, Research, Research Conclusions.
What do we value?
Aya and I looked into what we value and how we could build a brand off of these aspects. We sorted our values into a Venn diagram and then performed audits based off of brands who already had similar attributes.
Research and Audits
Aya and I initially did a lot of research and audits based on our values and ideas for our brand. Here are two highlights.
Research Conclusions
What resources can we provide for the community to promote wellbeing?
What can we learn from our audits? Here are some highlights of our research conclusions that guided us into Framework.
How do we ensure we can encourage human connection?
How can ideas be shared in order to bring a community together?
Part 2: Framework
Brand Mission, Brand Essence, Strategy, Activities Guide.
Brand Essence and Mission
Interlude transforms the space it occupies into a place for community. Guests are encouraged to linger, mingle, and create together whether as strangers or friends at Interlude’s pop-ups.
Interlude builds a community by providing a space to connect and create.
Strategy
How will Interlude pop up within certain spaces? Interlude will have a kit of parts that will allow flexibility for any space it will pop up in.
Interlude can pop up within many spaces. Activities, floor plans, furniture, and more can vary based on each space. No matter the space, Interlude will always foster a community.

Part 3: Branding
Moodboard, Material Palette, Branding Process, Brand Book, Graphic Applications
Moodboard
The mood board emphasizes Interlude’s bold, creative, and inviting personality.
Material Palette

Logotype Iterations
Following direction from the moodboard, I aimed to find a typeface that would accurately represent the mission and essence of Interlude.
Final Logotype
The typeface for Interlude is a nod to the bold nature of the brand, and how it will stand out within each space it will occupy.
Meet Interdude!
Interdude is our primary icon that represents the visual identity and mission of Interlude. He is derived from the logotype and always sports a smile. Interdude stands alongside the rest of the letters in the logotype, but can also stand on his own.

Style Guide
Derived from the primary logotype, the style guide outlines the overall brand of Interlude. From Interdude’s signature smirk to a wide range of bright colors, Interlude is guaranteed to stand out within a space.
Brand Book Summarized
The Interlude brand book outlines everything one needs to know about the brand. Below is a quick summary of the brand book, but the full PDF can be viewed by downloading below.
Part 4: Graphic Applications
Guides, Table Top Signs, Partitions, Sandwich Sign.
Guide Sheets
A guide sheet based around the specific activity that Interlude is facilitating to help guests easily get started.
5” x 7” Double sided laminated cardstock outlining the activity.
Table Top Signs
Signs that help guide the guests through the experience.
5” x 4” HDPE with reclaimed wood insert.
Partitions
Metal partitions that help divide the space from the other things around it.
5’ x 3’ Colored metal Partitions with vinyl sticker graphics.
Sandwich Sign
Placed near the borders of the Interlude pop-up to let guests know who is occupying the space.
2’ x 3’ Reclaimed wood sandwich sign.
Part 5: Final Design
Floor Plans, Kit of Parts, Furniture and Fixtures, Renders
Furniture and Fixtures
The furniture follows the forms of Interdude and the overall logotype. Spaces can choose which furniture they would like to have when working in collaboration.

Our Example
What if we popped up outside a community center where guests could paint their own tile to make a mural for their community?
